Episode 2 – I’m a Professional, Get Me Out of Here
Having made the transition from “corporate life” to running my own business, there are lots of learnings and experiences that I have picked up along the way. It’s only when I stop and reflect on my own transition and hear how others have gone about making their changes that I remember how exciting – and, at times, stressful – making a significant career move can be.
In our second podcast, we talk to our colleague Sarah about the essential considerations if you’re thinking about stepping out of your comfort zone and out of corporate life.
If you have aspirations to change career paths or starting your own business, here are our top tips on how to think about making a transition.
- Do your homework and don’t make any rash decisions without a plan. It’s easier to build something from the security of your current role.
- Know your key strengths, what interests you and what you are passionate about. This can help you identify what you may want to do or create. Understand why you want to make a move.
- Think about how you could make this work – talk yourself into it and don’t kill any ideas by over-analysing why it won’t work.
- What is your plan? Do the thinking and planning and build the business model.
- Crunch the numbers. What is your risk appetite, and is there a potential financial impact? Don’t let this be a reason not to make a move: run the numbers and see if you need to make any changes and reset expectations.
- Can you start a side hustle? Can you test and prototype your new business or career whilst still in your current role?
- Stretch the timeline – are there smaller steps and actions you can take to progress towards your “departure date”?
- Who can help you? Who are the people that can challenge your thinking?
